Julie Andrews: CV/Experience
Julie qualified in 1997 with a Degree in Speech and Language Therapy after completing a 4 year full time Bsc ‘Hons’ degree in Speech & language Pathology and Therapeutics at the University of Central England in Birmingham.
During this course, she gained first hand experience of working with people with communication difficulties during her Work Placement periods with North Warwickshire NHS Trust and Walsall NHS Trust.
Since qualifying, she has worked for Rockingham Forest NHS Trust in Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust, Northampton Primary Care Trust and worked as a Locum Therapist for Coventry, Leicester and Enfield PCT’s as well as the Dawn House School in Mansfield (ICAN school) before becoming a fully Independent Therapist.
Julie has been a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (MRSLT), since starting the University course in 1993 and joined ASLTIP in 1999 to begin providing Independent therapy on a part time basis alongside her NHS work.

Makaton signing workshop
This course covers the initial stages of simple finger spelling and signed language for both adults and children who are unable to develop spoken language, or who need to support their spoken language.
Derbyshire language scheme
This three day workshop enables the therapist to assess the level of a child's language development, both understanding and use of language. This course is nationally recognized and is used in many special and mainstream schools.
TEACCH training workshops
TEACCH was developed at the University of North Carolina. This approach can be used in the home, nurseries with pre-school children, mainstream schools and in special schools.
The TEACCH approach aims to clarify the environment for the person with Autism and use their strengths to help them compensate for their limitations.
Advanced level 2 TEACCH Training
Julie went to North Carolina in order to gain qualifications to implement and train others on how to use the TEACCH approach.
Hanen Parent Programmes
Hanen Parent Programme "It takes two to talk" - This workshop was developed in Canada to enhance interactive skills between parents and language delayed children.
Hanen Parent Programme "More than words" - This workshop is specifically for parents who have a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
A visual communication system used with people who are unable to specify their needs and wants verbally. This approach is frequently used with children who have autism and are non verbal.
